At SevenTravel we believe that travelling responsibly is no longer a ‘nice to have’, it’s a must.

That is why we’ve set ourselves the goal to become a net zero travel company by 2035. Read more about how we’re approaching this goal and why we’re investing in measuring and more importantly, reducing the carbon footprint of all our trips. All whilst keeping our luxury tailor-made experiences you crave and love.

What does it mean to be net zero?

Net zero refers to achieving a balance between the amount of greenhouse gas emissions our trips and business emit and the amount removed from the atmosphere. There are two different routes to achieving net zero, which work in tandem: reducing our existing emissions and actively removing greenhouse gases.

A gross zero target would mean reducing all emissions to zero. This is not realistic by 2035, so instead our net zero target recognises that there will be some emissions but that these need to be fully offset, predominantly through natural carbon sinks such as oceans and forests. In the future, the use artificial carbon sinks to increase carbon removal may be possible, and research into these technologies is ongoing.

When the amount of carbon emissions we produce are cancelled out by the amount removed, we will be a net zero travel company. The lower our emissions, the easier this becomes which is why we focus on reduction first and offsetting second. By 2035 we aim to have reduced our carbon footprint by 90%.

Why this is important

A 1.5°C increase in global temperatures will result in a global shift in our weather patterns and biodiversity. This will negatively impact all of us. From what we eat and what we do. The scary thing is that we are on course for a 3°C increase. This is a global crisis that requires all of us to act immediately to reduce our carbon footprint.

The Nitty Gritty

When calculating our carbon footprint, for reporting purposes our total emissions will be assigned into 3 categories (Scope 1, 2 & 3). Scope 1 being the emissions you have the most control over and Scope 3 being the least. We are pleased to say from our inception we have no scope 1 or 2 emissions and our plan is to keep it this way, forever.

Each year we will measure our carbon footprint and aim to reduce in the following year by 7%. Our intention is to help you travel more but with fewer emissions. We will do this by constantly redesigning our experiences to make sure we are using the most efficient forms of transport for each route, by choosing better suppliers, sourcing more local experiences and collaborating with our partners across the world to help start the same journey.

We do not have all the answers, but we believe that by making small but constant tweaks to how we operate, we can increase the positive impact our trips have on our clients and the planet.

We all have a carbon footprint. In order to take smart and quantifiable action we measure the carbon emissions of our business. This is all done to help us understand our impact and to reduce our carbon emissions year on year.

Accountability

We partnered with ecollective to help us measure and improve our carbon footprint. Calculating your own carbon footprint can be a little complex as almost everything in our day to day lives has some sort of footprint. Our calculation system is not perfect, but it is highly accurate. By calculating every element of the business we can see where to focus our attention in order to decarbonise quicker. For this project, we followed the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) and applied emission factors provided by DEFRA and other data sources. To keep ourselves accountable and open to criticism, we are happy to share our methodology. Just email us to find out more. Carbon calculations are never perfect but our aim is to make the measurements better each year.
