‘Once-in-a-lifetime journey’ has become something of a travel cliche but when this Antarctica trip encompasses nine ports and four countries it feels entirely justified. Epic is another word that springs to mind, with Antarctica a pristine wilderness of untamed snow-white splendour. This is the seventh continent, Earth’s final frontier.

But Antarctica’s white wilds is as fragile as it is flawless and this visit will ensure you get a greater insight into today’s social commentary on climate and environmental change. You’ll bookend your holiday in Antarctica in Ushuaia, Argentina, which is often billed as the ‘end of the world’ and is fully deserving of its outpost status. It’s the last thing you’ll see resembling anything like a city before you set sail into the wilderness aboard a Silversea cruise, where luxury and expert naturalists abound in equal measure. This is a cruise that is far more than just Antarctica; in fact, your first port of call is a Falkland Islands tour, where you’ll hop off with Silversea’s experts to explore several of its isles in search of albatrosses, penguins and seals, as well as its chequered history in Stanley.

Spend a couple of relaxing days at sea before it’s land ahoy again, this time among the glaciated peaks and legendary exploration history of South Georgia. This is an island packed with otherworldly wildlife encounters you’ll get to experience, like a giant colony of king penguins stretching as far as the eye can see. For the more adventurous, you can leave the Zodiac behind you and kayak the frozen waters instead. If the Falklands and South Georgia were just appetisers, then it’s time for the main course: Antarctica itself. See some of its most legendary locations for yourself, starting with Elephant Island, where Ernest Shackleton and his men sought salvation during their expedition in 1916.

Your journey carries on south to the Antarctic Sound, where you’ll glide past huge tabular icebergs and Cape petrels soaring overhead and disembark to go hiking and kayaking in the real Antarctica you’ve dreamed about. You’ll wind back towards South America via the Antarctic Peninsula and its scientific research bases, cathedral-sized icebergs and cyan-tinted glaciers, with the opportunity to see them all close-up in a Zodiac or on foot. Spy more research stations and wildlife on the South Shetland Islands – the north-western tip of the Antarctic Peninsula – before fording the fabled waters of the Drake Passage as you head back to Ushuaia, satisfied with your all-encompassing immersion in the Seventh Continent.

Experience highlights

  • Explore New Island, the western frontier of the Falkland archipelago. Silversea’s expedition ornithologists will help you spy its rockhopper penguins, wrinkled seals and albatrosses on a hike or in a kayak.
  • Scout the battlefields of the Falkland Islands. You will learn the history of the 1982 conflict, see Estancia Farm (one of the British bases during the war and where the term ‘yomp’ was born) and tour the capital, Stanley.
  • Receive a warm and friendly greeting when you land on the renowned Falkland Islands. Be greeted by the islanders with the local custom of smoko: tea, biscuits, and cakes.
  • Learn about Ernest Shackleton’s epic voyage with a visit to the South Georgia Museum and last resting place on South Georgia. There are also opportunities for sea kayaking or hiking South Georgia’s charcoal-black mountains and giant glaciers.
  • In company of your expert naturalist, learn the difference between a king penguin, with their vivid orange and yellow plumage around their necks, to other penguins such as the macaroni while exploring South Georgia.
  • Elephant Island is one of the best-known islands in Antarctica. It is an icy realm of rocks, snow and unforgiving weather. On a visit to the island, your expert guides will help you fathom exactly how Shackleton and twenty eight crew members stayed on this island for four and a half months.
  • Travel by fast Zodiac and sail within metres of iceberg and glaciers in the Antarctic Sound. Watch and listen for the cracking sound as ice calves from the Larsen Ice Shelf; this is a dramatic attack on your senses.
  • Stand on the Antarctic Peninsula, which remained undiscovered by man until the 1820s. You’ll have two days to explore this icy wilderness by Zodiac, kayak or on foot, where you’ll only be joined by large colonies of gentoo penguins.
  • View in awe at the imposing stadium-sized icebergs which float in the legendary Drake Passage“Drake Passages”. The humpback whales and hourglass dolphins will distract you from the potentially rough waters.
  • This is an Antarctic cruise with all the trimmings. Enjoy Silversea’s personal touch with butler service in every suite. Almost all ocean view suites also feature your own private teak veranda for epic icy views.
