Experience colourful street life, ancient temples, palaces, traditional villages and the relaxed atmosphere of Koh Yao Noi on this sixteen-day itinerary through the many and diverse attractions of the Kingdom of Thailand.

Our expert team of Travel Designers have carefully selected this ultimate Thailand itinerary which incorporates the landmark destinations of Chiang Mai, Pai, Chiang Rai and Phuket but also travels off the beaten path to the unspoiled island of Koh Yao Noi. One of the many highlights will be a two-night stay at the renowned Elephant Hills, a luxury tented camp, which is one of the leading conservation programmes in South-east Asia.

Thailand is a fascinating destination where religion is central to most people’s daily lives and you’ll begin in one of its most soulful places, Chiang Rai. You’ll spy its monasteries, tea plantations and buzzing night bazaar before moving onto its bigger sister, Chiang Mai. Its ancient core still retains a sleepy ambience with its Lanna architecture, temples and pagodas – a corner of Chiang Mai you’ll explore with good measure through the local eyes of a guide – as well as being a good base for a life-changing ethical elephant experience at a nearby jungle camp, where you can walk alongside, wash and make friends with these beautiful beasts.

Next, you’ll swap culture for the natural playground of Pai, a lush mountain valley stocked with waterfall hikes, hot springs, tribal villages and the 1.5km-long Tham Lod cave system. After going full throttle since day one, pause for breath at the glamorous bolthole of Iniala Beach House in Phuket, a sandy escape that feels as if it’s fallen off the map. Once you’ve recharged on your Phuket tour, head for the primal rainforest on a Khao Sok National Park tour, where you’ll take a boat to your serene lakeside lodge and use it as a comfy springboard for exploring the limestone formations of Pakarang Cave aboard a bamboo raft.

Your final few days of your Thailand adventure will be spent winding down at TreeHouse Villas on jungle-fringed Koh Yao Noi. This is rustic luxury at its pinnacle, with its eco-friendly thatched beachfront villas feeling like a luxury home belonging to the Swiss Family Robinson.

Experience highlights

  • Explore the remote monastery Tham Pa Acha Thong in Chiang Rai. It is here that the monks collect their daily alms by horse instead of on foot. You’ll also visit a neighbouring temple to watch monks practising Muay Thai martial arts.
  • Learn about tea production with a visit to Chui Fong plantation. One of the most renowned tea plantations in Chiang Rai, you’ll witness the complete process, from leaf picking to sampling the final product.
  • Step into one of Chiang Mai’s most revered pagodas, Wat Suan Dok. Observe devotees deep in prayer or paying homage to its mausoleum where the ashes of the former royal family from the Chet Ton dynasty are interred.
  • Visit one of Doi Suthep’s monks and receive a blessing of good health and fortune. Stay for the monks’ evening chanting to conclude the day, a truly ethereal experience.
  • Marvel at the beauty of Wat Srisuphan, a temple where everything that glitters is silver. Chiang Mai is renowned for its skilled silversmiths and this temple is decorated with the same fine artisan creations they display in their shops throughout the city. The glittery mix of silver, aluminium and nickel (as well as the odd splash of gold) is like stepping into a giant jewellery box.
  • Float through the vast Tham Lod cave system on a bamboo raft, spying its unusual limestone formations. These caves come alive in the evening, when swifts return to nest and bats leave in search of food.
  • Relax on the golden sands of Phuket at Iniala Beach House, a tranquil sanctuary that boasts a front-row seat for some of the most fiery sunsets in Thailand.
  • Explore the natural splendour of Khao Sok National Park. Wake up to the morning mist hanging over Cheow Larn Lake at Elephant Hills, tour through pristine jungle to an emerald-hued lagoon and glide through the limestone cavern of Pakarang Cave.
  • Finish amidst the tropical isolation of Koh Yao Noi, an island off Thailand’s Andaman Coast oozing sleepy seclusion and buttermilk beaches. Feel like a refined version of Robinson Crusoe as you stay on your own treehouse-style villa overlooking supreme sands.
