April is epic for animal spotting, a month when migrating species intermingle on St Lucia at the same time: humpback whales, nesting leatherback turtles and breeding birdlife are all here. If you’re after a dose of culture, the island’s annual Jazz & Arts Festival is usually either at the end of April or start of May.

At the tail end of Oman's dry season, April represents the last chance to visit before temperatures climb to scorching levels, with the mercury sitting around 30°C. Oman's mountainous regions will be cooler.

The weather is still comfortable enough to explore Muscat, desert and the mountains on one trip. Jebel Akhdar's damask roses are also in bloom, adding a pretty pink tinge to its slopes.
